Since its creation in 1856 at the Ope´ra de Paris (choreography by Joseph Mazilier and music by Adolphe Adam), Le Corsaire is deemed one of the most spectacular ballets of the 19th century. It reached great celebrity with the versions of Jules Perrot (1858) and Marius Petipa (1863). Then at the beginning of the 60s, Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn made its iconic pas de deux legendary. Inspired by Lord Byron’s epic poem that narrates the love story in the ancient Turkish city of Edirne of a Greek pirate and a slave trader’s beautiful ward who is coveted by a pasha, Le Corsaire abounds with spectacular and magical tableaux. Former star dancer of the Ope´ra de Paris and now director of the Vienna State Ballet, Manuel Legris transmits the legacy of the E´cole de danse franc¸aise by signing this new adaptation.
